BRIDGE TO LIGHT
Spiritual Wayfaring towards Islam
Kathleeen St.Onge’s new book provides insights to the conversation about Islam in the West.
SOMERSET, NJ- January 12, 2007 - There’s certainly no shortage of information on the news about Islam and Muslims. Western media are providing their audiences with a selective portrait of a religion which seems both passionate and elusive. But what is Islam really about? And what is it that Muslims actually believe, that makes them dress, and act, and seem so different?
BRIDGE TO LIGHT is a unique contemporary contribution to the literature about Islam and an important new voice in interfaith dialogue. In this unusual approach, a Canadian convert to Islam recounts her reflections through a journey of understanding. Originally written as a series of articles, this teacher and writer navigates readers through everything from the basic tenets of the Islamic faith, to the Islamic way of life, Muslim beliefs about heaven, hell, and Judgement Day, the ego trap, ‘jihad,’ evolution, and the oneness of God.
Raised to be only nominally religious, the author experienced the typical joys, pitfalls, and challenges of western living until she eventually turned to Islam. As a result of her perspective, the author is able to focus on spirituality in an eye-opening way, tackling head-on rather delicate issues from the Islamic position, with a rigorous level of theological, spiritual, and rational investigation. Throughout, she puts an emphasis on our need to feel not only with our outward senses but also to discern and observe with the heart, so as to grow stronger souls.
Delivered in a distinctly western style, the book presents ideas which are surprisingly accessible and it assumes no prior knowledge of Arabic or Islam. It should appeal to Muslims of all ages—especially youth—who want to discover or develop their faith. The book should also prove helpful to Muslims wishing to explain their religion to non-Muslim friends, co-workers and neighbours. Beyond this, it is recommended reading for spiritual “seekers” who may be wondering what it is, exactly, that Islam has to offer. At this time in history where the need for interfaith tolerance has never been greater, BRIDGE TO LIGHT really does provide a bridge of understanding.
EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK: From THE COMMON GROUND, Part One: The Corner Stone (99 words)
Growing up as a Christian, I had no idea Muslims worshipped the same God I did. Dressed differently, speaking languages I couldn’t understand, Muslims seemed like a world apart from everything I was. It wasn’t until I met a Muslim that I learned the astounding truth: Muslims believe in heaven, hell, angels, and the momentous people I was familiar with—Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. Ultimately, it is not conflict that separates us, but common ignorance of the fact that like an echo, God’s word has been sent to many places and times, to be heard by everyone.
